A Nigerian lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, Esq., the Managing Partner at LAW CORRIDOR, has urged the flag bearers of the opposition parties to accept the Supreme Court verdict and congratulate President Bola Tinubu.
The apex court on Thursday had dismissed the appeal by the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, terming it as lacking merit.
Following this verdict, Olajengbesi, in a statement he personally signed and issued, urged losing parties to accept defeat and congratulate the President, just like former president Goodluck Jonathan did in 2015 after losing the election to former president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
The statement read, “We wish to acknowledge the recent ruling by the Supreme Court affirming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s election victory and extend our congratulations and well-wishes to His Excellency, Mr. President, Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“We also take this moment to emphasize the paramount importance of upholding peace, order, and unwavering respect for the rule of law in the aftermath of this significant decision. It is crucial for the stability and progress of our nation. In light of this, we call upon the opposition candidates and political parties to graciously accept the Nigeria Supreme Court’s verdict in good faith, regardless of their individual beliefs or sentiments. We implore them to exhibit a sense of patriotism and statesmanship as they navigate the path forward. While their concerns and claims are duly acknowledged, we encourage them to use this moment as an opportunity to strengthen their political foundations and actively contribute to the continued development of Nigeria’s constitutional framework.
“Furthermore, we want to express our deep appreciation to all those who have played a role in shaping Nigeria’s jurisprudence, particularly in electoral matters of such significant weight and importance. In reflecting upon the wisdom of the esteemed jurist, Hon. Justice Chukwudifu Akunne Oputa, J.S.C, we are reminded that the finality of Supreme Court decisions is not a declaration of infallibility but a profound acknowledgment of their ultimate and irrevocable authority in our legal system.
“Therefore, in the spirit of unity, reconciliation, and a profound respect for the law, we wholeheartedly encourage all parties to embrace a peaceful and orderly transition.
