Governor of Ebonyi state and an All Progressive Congress presidential hopeful said a consensus candidate would emerge in the party’s convention.
Umahi made this remark during an interactive session with journalists on Channels TV Sunrise Daily.
He said ”Consensus building had been part of the culture of APC and the political parties. I believe strongly that the APC will not do what the PDP did. Should APC go the way of PDP during their last convention, then I would say look; there is a severe problem for our country Nigeria.
”So, I believe that the way we came out of the convention for the national chairman is how we would come out from the convention for our choice of candidate in 2023; I believe strongly.
”And we all pledge to that, during the screening, that whoever that emerges through consensus building, that we would abide by that. So, no one is more important when assessed than the other.
”But when you set criteria as I said from the beginning, then people begin to know whether I fit into this, like if you say one of the criteria, which is public appearance, in the way of public engagement and what you were able to achieve in that engagement, then some people may not fit in.
”If you say you are looking for a religious person to drive this ticket, then some people may not also fit in; so, there have been criteria that have been set for who will fly the party’s flag, and you set the criteria base on what you believe that Nigerians are looking for in the way of quality for their next president”.
The APC convention is slated for today, June 6 -7, 2022, where the party will choose their flag bearer to compete in the 2023 presidential elections.
