The Bauchi Emirate Council has withdrawn the traditional title of “Mandarin Bauchi” from Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South senatorial district.
The decision follows a council meeting on Wednesday, where Senator Umar’s alleged misconduct was discussed.
The council cited his behaviour as contradictory to the values and traditions upheld by the Bauchi Emirate, according to Politics Nigeria.
Senator Umar, a member of the All Progressives Congress, had accused Governor Bala Mohammed of diverting palliative items meant to alleviate economic hardship in the state.
The Senator was reacting to the governor’s criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies.
He claimed that essential supplies like rice, corn, and fertilizer meant to alleviate economic hardship in the state were allegedly sold by the state government instead of being distributed to the people.
The council’s letter, dated August 14, 2024, formalized the title withdrawal.
This development highlights the growing tensions between Senator Umar and Governor Mohammed, with the council’s decision emphasizing the importance of upholding traditional values and respect for authority.
