The former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd), has stated that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has fulfilled the promise he made to subdue the deadly terrorist groups, Boko Haram and Islamic State of West Africa Province terrorists.
According to Daily Post, Buratai, stated this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.
However, the former COAS emphasized that believing victory over Boko Haram terrorists meant the end of hostilities was incorrect. That would happen, he argued, only if terrorist groups agreed to abandon their ideology, accept democracy, respect the national constitution, and seek peace.
Buratai stated that the President has had clear-cut measures to subjugate terrorists and restore peace to the North East and Nigeria in general since his inauguration.
The president, he recalled from his inaugural address, had announced that the military command center would be moved to Maiduguri and would remain there until Boko Haram was entirely crushed.
“I say this with every sense of responsibility that the Buhari administration has subdued the Boko Haram insurgency and terrorism,” said Buratai.
He claimed the president knew exactly what he was talking about when it came to the origins of the insurgency and terrorism.
Buratai claimed that government officials’ mistakes, indifference, or complicity allowed the Boko Haram insurgency to flourish prior to 2015.
He went on to say that this is what pushed Boko Haram to the point where it is today—a horrific force that has claimed the lives of thousands and taken over large portions of Nigeria.
“This is the true summary of the Boko Haram armed insurrection. The murder of Muhammad Yusuf by the police was clearly extrajudicial. Negligence, complacency and collusion with the proponents and strategic leaders of the Boko Haram insurgency for selfish reasons caused the insurgency to degenerate into a full-blown nightmare,” he added
