A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, John Kome, said that the level of corruption in the country is “demonic.”
The party’s candidate for the Ikeja Constituency 1 in the 2023 general elections, made this known in an interview with the Independent.
He reiterated that corruption in the nation has been enshrined in the blood stream of many Nigerians whether old or young.
He opined that it will only take a “monster” to defeat corruption in the country.
While referring to the recent corruption exposure in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, he stressed that only selfless Nigerians can manage such a ministry.
He expressed optimism that despite the level of corruption in the nation, the country still has good people like Tunde Idiagbon, Dora Akunyili, Prof. Ishaq Oloyode, etc.
He said, “The problem of corruption in Nigeria has become endemic and demonic; endemic, in the sense that it has become part of the Nigerian system. Corruption in the sense that it has eaten into the fabric, veins, nerves and blood stream of almost all Nigerians, young or old. Demonic in the sense that corruption has become a monster that only a monster human being can tame. It takes a monster to defeat the Nigerian kind of corruption, bearing in mind that there is corruption everywhere in the world.
“To handle the corruption in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, we need people who are selfless human beings to manage. Even if the ministry is given to a religious minded Nigerian, the demon of corruption will quickly swing into action to fight that righteous and religious man or woman. But I strongly believe that we have the likes of Tunde Idiagbon, Dora Akunyili, Prof. Ishaq Oloyode (of JAMB) in Nigeria who, if posted to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the ideals and mission of that ministry will be achieved.
“As a Nigerian, nothing stops me, Dr. Kome, from making a difference in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. But, my life will be at stake. I should be ready to step on toes to stop because as we are often told, in Nigeria, corruption will always fight back with dangerous weapons of mass destruction. Mr. President should look for such people in Nigeria because they exist.”
