Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has called on stakeholders to collaborate in restoring lasting peace to the Effium war-torn communities in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.
The governor made this appeal while receiving members of the Ohaukwu community who paid him a Christmas homage at his country home in Oferekpe Agbaja, Izzi Local Government Area.
Describing the Effium and Ezza people as relatives, Governor Nwifuru urged the warring groups to embrace peace, assuring them that the state government was committed to resolving the crisis impartially.
“I have heard your request regarding the release of those in detention as a result of the crisis,” the governor said. “I have directed the peace committee, headed by Ambassador Frank Ogbuewu, to profile all inmates in various Correctional Centres as a result of the Effium crisis. Unfortunately, in the preliminary findings, it was observed that some inmates in the correctional facility from the community, detained for criminal cases, are now claiming to be held because of the communal clashes. Hence, there is a need for thorough investigation before their release. So, as soon as the investigation is done, they will be released,” he assured.
Governor Nwifuru commended the people of Ohaukwu for their ongoing support and cooperation in ensuring good governance.
The leader of the delegation, Senator Anthony Agbo, expressed appreciation for the governor’s developmental projects that have positively impacted the lives of Ohaukwu residents. He also lauded the inclusion of sons and daughters of the community in key positions within the state government.
Senator Agbo appealed to the governor to expedite the release of those detained at the Correctional Centre, many of whom have been held for nearly four years due to the crisis.
The meeting highlighted the government’s determination to address the lingering conflict and foster unity among the people of Ohaukwu.
