Edo 2024: I don’t have anointed candidate, says Obaseki

Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has said he is does not have an anointed candidate for the governorship election set to hold in the state in 2024.

Obaseki made this statement during an exclusive interview with BBC Pidgin.

He said, “I don’t have a favored candidate, It’s the people that will choose who they want to govern them, my own is to look through their selection and advise, saying “this one is good, this has capacity, this has a record of governance and the one that is not good, I will advise that let us check this one well”.”

When asked about his stance on the issue of political godfatherism, he said there are two types, the positive and the negative, he, however, stated that he supports the positive type of godfatherism.

He said, “If a child is born in the church, someone is sought to be his/her godfather to train the child in the way of the Lord, that’s the positive godfatherism.

“But, that one where someone somewhere would form a cabal, cult and start teleguiding you on what to do and share money in governance, that’s negative godfatherism and i’m not in support of that.

“Anything that is not correct, that is not fair, that would not help the people of Edo unite, I am not involved.”

Obaseki has been known for his stance against godfatherism since the inception of his government, after what seemed like a fall-out between him and his ‘political godfather’, Adams Oshiomhole, who was his predecessor.
