The Edo State Government has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, regarding the breakdown of law and order in the state on Thursday, July 18, 2024.
The government accused the reinstated deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, of orchestrating the violence under the pretext of executing a judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, despite a stay of execution being filed and an appeal entered.
According to the petition, Shaibu hired armed thugs, including Tony Adun (Aka Tony Kabaka) and Daniel Eromosele (Aka Pikolo), among others, leading to the death of a police inspector, Akor Onuh, in Benin City. The petition stated that Shaibu’s actions resulted in destruction within Benin City and the death of a police officer.
The petition read: “Firstly, we write to formally express our heartfelt condolences to the Nigeria Police Force on the passing of one of your gallant officers, Inspector Akor Onuh… His bravery and commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten.”
The government explained that Shaibu’s actions were an attempt to enforce a court judgment without awaiting the final outcome of the judicial process, contrary to the rule of law. The petition alleged that Shaibu and his thugs invaded Benin Airport, shooting sporadically, and then moved into town, attacking road users, destroying vehicles and other properties.
The government called for a thorough investigation into the matter, urging the IGP to invite Shaibu and his gang for questioning, and if found culpable, bring them to book.
