With twelve days left in Governor Godwin Obaseki’s tenure in Edo State, the state Accountant General, Mr. Julius Anelu, and four other government officials have reportedly been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
According to sources cited by Daily Post, the officials are allegedly being held due to their roles as signatories to the state’s accounts.
An EFCC insider revealed that the officials were detained on Thursday at the Benin zonal office following a call for a briefing. Reportedly, EFCC plans to hold them until November 12, the day marking the end of Governor Obaseki’s administration.
The arrests have reportedly disrupted key government functions, resulting in delays in the disbursement of salaries, pensions, and other payments for civil servants and public employees. Additionally, payments for statutory obligations, including security expenses, have been affected.
