El-Rufai’s exit to trigger APC implosion, PDP chieftain predicts

The immediate past National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kola Ologbodiyan, has predicted that the All Progressives Congress will implode following the resignation of Malam Nasir El-Rufai from the ruling party.

On Monday, March 10, 2025, El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, defected from the APC to the Social Democratic Party after criticizing the party and President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a statement announcing his resignation, El-Rufai accused the APC of neglecting its internal structures and treating its members with disdain. He said, “There is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party.”

Reacting to El-Rufai’s defection during an appearance on Arise Television’s The Morning Show, Ologbodiyan asserted that the former governor’s departure would trigger a crisis within the APC. He stated, “There will be an implosion in President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s party, the APC, and anybody in doubt of that should look at what has happened with El-Rufai’s resignation. El-Rufai is a founding machine in the All Progressives Congress, and if a founding machine can leave the party, you can imagine what’s going to follow.”

Ologbodiyan also called on the media to strengthen opposition parties, emphasizing that a culture of silence should not be encouraged. He said, “Let us find a way to embolden the opposition because, without opposition, there is no democracy.”

Regarding the proposed coalition of opposition parties, Ologbodiyan revealed that the PDP has not yet made a final decision on the matter. However, he indicated that the party would consider aligning with other political groups to strengthen the opposition. He added that either the faction led by Abubakar Atiku or the group loyal to Nyesom Wike would likely join the coalition.
