Former President of Tanzania, Ali Hassan Mwinyi, has been reportedly dead.
This was announced by the current President of the country, Samia Suluhu Hassan, in a television broadcast on Thursday.
The late President succeeded Tanzania’s first post-independence president, Julius Nyerere, who left office in 1985 after 22 years in power.
Late Nwinyi was credited with ushering the East African nation into free market economics, while he was alive, and was succeeded by the late Benjamin Mkapa in 1995.
Announcing his death on Thursday, the current President of the country said, “On behalf of the government, I would like to convey my condolences to the family, relatives, friends and all Tanzanians for this loss.”
According to President Hassan, Mwinyi died in a hospital in Dar es Salaam, where he was receiving treatment for lung cancer.
The President noted that the former President Nwinyi had been receiving treatment since November, this year.
