The Federal Government has pledged to enhance the capacity and competitiveness of Nigeria’s national carriers.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made this commitment on Friday in Abuja during the “Stakeholders Engagement on the Legal Framework for the Fly Nigeria Bill and Related Enabling Legislation.”
Keyamo explained that the Fly Nigeria Bill 2024 aims to strengthen the capacity of national carriers, promote national pride, and improve service delivery within the aviation sector. He added that the government would seek legislative support for the bill, urging the National Assembly to act swiftly in passing it.
The minister also emphasized the government’s plan for continued investment in aviation infrastructure, which he believes is crucial for the sector’s growth and sustainability. Additionally, he highlighted efforts to build capacity through training and development for aviation personnel, ensuring they meet international standards and improve overall service delivery.
The Fly Nigeria Bill, once enacted, will make it mandatory for government-financed air transportation, including that for government personnel, contractors, and grantees, to be carried out by Nigerian air flag carriers. Keyamo urged all stakeholders to collaborate for the successful implementation of the bill and related legislation.
At the event, stakeholders, including the Airline Operators of Nigeria, called on the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to prioritize training and professional development initiatives. They also recommended targeted funding and strategic partnerships with the private sector to achieve the ministry’s objectives.
The stakeholders further proposed the creation of a monitoring and evaluation framework to assess the progress and impact of the Fly Nigeria Act. They also suggested the establishment of a dedicated unit within the ministry to oversee the bill’s implementation. Additionally, they emphasized the need for a public awareness campaign to educate Nigerians on the benefits of the Fly Nigeria Act and encourage the use of national carriers.
“Fly Nigeria Bill is an Act to make it mandatory for government financed air transportation of government personnel, contractors, grantees and properties to be carried by Nigeria Air Flag Carriers.
” I urge all the stakeholders to work towards the successful implementation of the Fly Nigeria Act and related legislation,” the minister said.
