FG slams Emir Sanusi over critique of Tinubu’s reforms

The Federal Government has reacted to comments made by His Highness, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, regarding the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking at a public event in Lagos, Emir Sanusi acknowledged the necessity of the government’s reforms but noted that he had chosen “not to help the government” by defending them.

In a statement released by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government expressed amusement at Sanusi’s stance, particularly as a leader expected to uphold “forthrightness, fairness, and justice.”

The statement read, “While we acknowledge that Emir Sanusi, like every Nigerian, has the inalienable right to express opinions on governance, it is surprising that he would publicly admit to withholding the truth due to personal interest hinged on imaginary antagonism.”

The Federal Government highlighted the significance of its economic reforms, describing them as bold and necessary steps to address Nigeria’s entrenched economic challenges.

“These reforms were not implemented because they are easy but because they are essential for Nigeria’s long-term stability and growth, a point Emir Sanusi himself has consistently advocated,” the statement added.

The government acknowledged the temporary hardships Nigerians are facing due to these reforms, describing them as a “necessary consequence of decades of irresponsible economic management.” It cited the unification of exchange rates, which has increased investor confidence, and the removal of fuel subsidies, which has freed resources for critical sectors like infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

The statement also highlighted progress made since the reforms, including reduced debt service-to-revenue ratios and a positive economic outlook as projected by institutions such as the World Bank.

“It is disappointing that reforms widely recognised as essential by global experts—and previously endorsed by Emir Sanusi himself—are now being subtly criticised because of a shift in loyalty,” the government noted.

The statement urged Emir Sanusi to contribute constructively to national development rather than undermine efforts due to perceived estrangement from his former allies in government.

“Rebuilding Nigeria requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders. Esteemed leaders must refrain from rhetoric that undermines public trust and instead champion the collective goal of a prosperous Nigeria,” it stated.

The Federal Government reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to leading Nigeria towards economic sustainability and shared prosperity. It called for collaboration among stakeholders, emphasising the importance of constructive dialogue over divisive narratives.

“Let history record this moment as a turning point—when leaders and citizens alike choose to prioritise the nation’s destiny over personal gain,” the statement added.
