A member of the House of Representatives for Ideato North and South, Imo Ugochinyere, has urged Peoples Democratic Party governors to show solidarity with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara by visiting him in the state.
Ugochinyere expressed disappointment that none of the PDP governors have publicly supported Fubara amidst the escalating political crisis preceding the October 5 Local Government election.
According to Ugochinyere, Governor Fubara has demonstrated remarkable courage in standing up against threats from police and other political interests in the state.
He emphasized that the people of Rivers State’s right to vote is under attack from federal agents, and it’s crucial for PDP governors to take a stand.
Ugochinyere stated, “Serious opposition Governors would have flown to Rivers State right now and be seen with Governor Fubara side by side as show of strong solidarity. The right of Rivers people to vote is under attack from federal agents and you are drinking tea. Please stop making opposition look like jokers.”
He further appealed to the PDP and opposition governors to boldly stand with Fubara, saying, “Let the PDP and opposition Governors fly down to Rivers State, and boldly stand with Governor Fubara who has displayed great courage to defend democracy at all costs.”
Ugochinyere also warned the governors that the same political interests threatening Rivers State could soon target their own states, noting, “Those at the gate of democracy in Rivers will soon launch attack on your states, and what you do today can make or mar our democracy.”
Additionally, Ugochinyere condemned the alleged attempt by police officers to steal electoral materials for the local government election, describing it as a treasonable action that requires strong condemnation and solidarity from opposition governors.
He concluded by urging the governors to demonstrate leadership and not be intimidated by pro-Wike groups.
