Fubara urges calm amid emergency rule declaration

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on residents to remain calm and law-abiding following the political crisis that led to his suspension by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to The PUNCH, Fubara reassured the people of Rivers State of his dedication to upholding peace and constitutional governance, despite the ongoing turmoil.

“I address you today with a deep sense of responsibility and calm, as we navigate this unfortunate moment in our state’s political history,” he stated. “Since assuming office, we have prioritized the protection of lives and property and ensured the continuous progress of our dear state.”

Fubara stressed that his administration has remained committed to constitutional order and the rule of law, even in the face of political challenges. He highlighted his adherence to the mediation efforts led by President Tinubu, including reinstating commissioners who had resigned.

“Furthermore, we moved swiftly to comply with the Supreme Court’s judgment immediately after receiving the certified true copy, all in an effort to restore normalcy,” he said.

However, he accused the Rivers State House of Assembly of frustrating efforts to maintain peace, thereby making governance more difficult.

Despite the political crisis, Fubara reassured residents that the state remained stable, with salaries being paid and developmental projects ongoing.

“At this critical time, I urge all Rivers people to remain peaceful and law-abiding,” he added. “We will engage with all relevant institutions to ensure that our democracy remains strong and that Rivers State continues to thrive.”

The governor’s address followed President Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, in which he declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing persistent political instability.

“By this declaration, the Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs. Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State are hereby suspended for an initial period of six months,” Tinubu announced.

As part of the emergency measures, Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas as the state administrator to oversee governance during the emergency period.
