Funso Doherty resigns from ADC, joins PDP

The former governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress in Lagos State, Funsho Doherty, has resigned his membership of the party and subsequently joined the Peoples Democratic Party.

Doherty made this announcement in two separate press releases issued on Monday.

The release stating his resignation from the ADC was titled: “RESIGNATION FROM AFRICAN DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS (ADC)”.

It read, “After wide consultation, reflection and careful consideration, I have reached the decision to leave the Party and hereby resign my membership.

“This decision is in keeping with our assessment of what is needed at this time in the effort to bring positive change to the trajectory of governance in Lagos State and to substantially improve the lives of our people.

“It has been an honor to serve alongside you and others as we worked towards our shared aspirations for Lagos State. Your support has been invaluable, and together, we have laid a strong foundation for the future.

“In moving forward, I remain resolutely dedicated to our mission to improve governance and uplift the lives of our citizens which, I believe, will transcend party lines and political affiliations.”

Following this notice, the release announcing his membership of the PDP was titled: “STATEMENT ON JOINING THE PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) – IT IS TIME.”

It read, “After extensive consultations, it is with humility and great expectations for Lagos State’s future that I announce that I have joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“This phase of our journey stems from our belief that Lagos needs a strong, credible alternative to the exclusionary and extractive governance model that has dominated since 1999. Despite trillions of Naira spent over a generation, Lagos State still lacks fundamental services: public water supply, reliable and affordable power, quality public education and healthcare, mass housing, robust mass transit, and basic public law and order. The government’s actions also have alarming implications for climate risks like flooding.

“We believe it is time to present a united front against the current entitled, insensitive, and self-serving leadership that celebrates the unacceptable status quo. Our goal is to deliver effective, inclusive, and accountable governance for the people of Lagos.

“With its national presence, institutional structure, and broad recognition, the PDP offers the best platform to challenge the status quo in Lagos State. With the right candidates, we can build a successful movement. This decision was made after extensive consultations and consideration of your views. I am deeply grateful to all who provided comments and advice.

“We recognize the challenges ahead, including intra-party differences that must be navigated and managed. We are committed to working with others to bring solutions. Every party faces internal differences and challenges this is the nature of political parties.

“I invite you to join us in creating a new era of inclusive governance and broad- based, people-driven prosperity in Lagos State.”
