Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has announced plans to hold Local Government elections in the state, revealing that a draft bill will be presented to the House of Assembly to amend the state’s local government electoral law.
Speaking during a media parley in Umuahia, Otti stated, “The timetable for the council election is not yet out. We believe things need to be changed in the electoral law. In the next few days, we will be approaching the House of Assembly to change a few things, and make the conduct of the election as seamless as possible.”
He assured that all political parties and participants would have an equal opportunity during the exercise. Otti also addressed the resignation of his former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, explaining that she was found to have abused some procedures in her duties.
Recall that the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, had earlier stated that the governor wanted to stabilize and get the councils working before conducting local government elections, citing the need to clean up the system after meeting a lot of rot in the state.
The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission had previously postponed the local government election scheduled for May 19, 2023, due to a strike action by the Nigerian Labour Congress and court orders.
