Hardship: Akume begs Nigerians to avoid crime

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has called on Nigerians not to resort to crime despite the country’s ongoing challenges.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at the fourth quarterly meeting organized by the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, Akume stressed the importance of addressing the link between Nigeria’s natural resources and the rising insecurity.

He noted that the poor management of these resources has worsened both economic and social insecurities in the country, according to Peoples Gazette.

Akume urged religious leaders to work together in promoting sustainability and security, emphasizing the need for stable policies, structural changes, and improved governance to tackle these issues effectively.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reiterated the police force’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to enhance peace and stability in Nigeria.

He expressed confidence that efforts to address the management of natural resources would have a positive impact on the country’s security.

“We are willing and ready to partner stakeholders to ensure we enjoy the natural resources entrusted to this country. On this note, we wish NIREC a successful celebration and look forward to partnering with you to increase harmony in this country.

“I pray that this meeting yields a positive declaration, especially concerning natural resources and security,” said the police chief.

The Executive Secretary of NIREC, Cornelius Omonokhua, also spoke about the negative impact of Nigeria’s natural resources, which have become a source of pain rather than prosperity. Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, further acknowledged the challenges posed by insecurity and the mismanagement of resources. He encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful and steadfast in their prayers as the country seeks solutions to these persistent problems.
