Stern, armed security personnel have cordoned off the Lagos State House of Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, as lawmakers prepare to hold an emergency plenary session on Monday, March 3, 2025, amid heightened tensions.
As early as 7 am, the already significant security presence at the Assembly—maintained for about two weeks—was further reinforced ahead of an anticipated leadership change.
Vanguard reported that sources indicate that the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, is expected to tender her resignation to facilitate the emergence of a new Speaker in line with the zoning arrangement favouring candidates from the West zone.
Meanwhile, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad and armed officers from the Lagos State Police Command have taken strategic positions around the Assembly premises. Every guest, including staff members, is being thoroughly searched before being granted access to the complex.
Describing the situation, an Assembly staff member who spoke to *Vanguard* on condition of anonymity said:
“The atmosphere in the Assembly this morning is very tense with heavy security around the Assembly.
“It was difficult for the staff to gain access to the Assembly. It took me over an hour before I was allowed into the premises.”
The emergency session follows weeks of intense political maneuvering and interventions, culminating in a resolution brokered by President Bola Tinubu and top leaders of the All Progressives Congress over the weekend.
According to sources, the high-level negotiations solidified the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker, though his exit was softened by allowing him to resign rather than face outright dismissal.
