How Akpabio can be impeached, Shehu Sani tells senators

A former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central, Senator Shehu Sani, has outlined the only feasible method to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

On Tuesday, Sani emphasized that a senator must initiate the impeachment process by consulting with colleagues and securing sufficient votes to proceed.

Sani cautioned, however, that if the impeachment attempt fails, the senator who initiated the process may face suspension until the next election.

He stated on X: “Removing Akpabio is only possible if a Senator consults his colleagues and gets enough votes to initiate an impeachment. If the plot fails, the Senator may go on suspension till the next election. That is it.”

Sani’s comments come amid calls for Akpabio’s impeachment from activist Aisha Yesufu, following his controversial statement preceding the EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest.

Yesufu urged senators to take action, saying: “Dear Senators. It is time to impeach Godswill Akpabio. It is still one of you that will replace him as Senate President.”

Yesufu’s remarks were in response to Akpabio’s statement that senators would be “eating” while Nigerians protested against President Bola Tinubu’s government.

Akpabio’s comment was widely criticized, with many viewing it as insensitive and dismissive of the protesters’ concerns. Yesufu’s call for his impeachment has gained traction on social media, with many Nigerians expressing support for the move.

However, as Senator Sani noted, impeaching Akpabio will not be an easy task. It will require a significant amount of support from senators, and even then, there are no guarantees of success. If the impeachment attempt fails, the senator who initiated the process may face suspension, which could have significant political consequences.
