Ikonne: Abia PDP halts campaigns after gov candidate’s death

The People’s Democratic Party, Abia State Chapter has suspended all its electioneering activities.

 

According to the statement issued by the Vice Chairman/Acting State Publicity Secretary of PDP in the State, where the party revealed that the campaign activities were suspended, due to the death of the gubernatorial candidate of the party in Abia State, for the coming election.

 

The Governorship Candidate of the party in Abia, Professor Eleazar Ikonne was said to have died at the National Hospital Abuja, on Wednesday, according to his son.

 

The party in its reaction to his death, said, “Abia People’s Democratic Party regrets to announce the death of Prof. Eleazar Uche Ikonne, her gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 general election.

 

“Following his death, the State Party hierarchy hereby suspended all campaign activities for three days from tomorrow, as a sign of respect and love for the soul of our fallen compatriot.

 

“As we mourn his passage, we commiserate with his immediate family, the Abia State Governor, His Excellency Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, all members of our great party, the PDP and good people of Abia State, on the death of this illustrious son of the State.

 

“We call on the members of the PDP to remain calm and steadfast and await further directives from the leadership of the Party.”

 

It was therefore, stated that the late Ikonne served as the Rector of Abia State University, Uturu, during his lifetime.
