I'll unite Nigerians, Tinubu tells Blinken

By Christian George

Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to democracy as he shares details of his telephone conversation with US Secretary of States, Anthony Blinken on Tuesday night.

He emphasized that his government would focus on delivering institutional reforms and developmental programs to deepen democratic institutions and bring help to poor Nigerians.

According to a report by Daily Post, the President-elect reaffirmed his determination to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and faithfully serve the people as their president.

In a statement by his spokesperson, Tunde Rahman, he recalled his travels to America in the 70s as well as how he graduated with honours as an accountant in 1979.

He reiterated that he was granted asylum by the US when, due to his determined struggle for democracy in Nigeria, he was forced into exile by the late General Sani Abacha’s military junta.

Tinubu expressed the belief that the result of the February 25 presidential election was the reflection of the will of Nigerians.

He also vowed to unite the country as he works to ensure that citizens are happy as well as enjoy the benefits of democracy.

He added that without national unity, security, economic development and good governance, Nigeria would not become a better place to live or play her proper role in the comity of African nations.

He tasked the US to assist Nigeria in the areas of security and economic investment with the view to repositioning the country as a star in the continent.

In his reaction, Secretary Blinken assured that Nigeria should expect a good and mutually-beneficial relationship with the US.

He assured that he would play his part to ensure a sustained and cordial relationship between the two nations to fruition, as Nigeria’s peace is also important to not just the United States but Africa.
