Senator Patrick Ndubueze, who represents Imo-North senatorial district (Okigwe zone), was attacked by gunmen at his home in Umualumoke on Monday, February 12. One of his police orderlies was killed in the invasion.
The Imo state police command confirmed the incident and said a tactical team was deployed to track down the assailants. The state commissioner of police, Aboki Danjuma, assured the public that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
A source close to the senator said the gunmen stormed Ndubueze’s residence and shot his policeman. The senator escaped without injuries, but was devastated by the death of his orderly.
The source also raised alarm over the insecurity in Okigwe, citing a recent attack on the Correctional Service where a police inspector was killed, an officer was abducted, and prisoners were freed.
“Okigwe has become a war zone where no one is saved. We are living in total fear. Most of our youths have run away for fear of being killed. Our security agencies are not doing enough to combat crimes in the state. Yet, there are so many of them (security men) in this area,” the source lamented.
Senator Ndubueze is a member of the All Progressive Congress and was elected to the National Assembly on February 25, 2023.
