The erstwhile National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has been re-elected by the party, to hold the position for the second time.

Abure was re-elected on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at the National Convention of the party, organised by its National Working Committee in Nnewi, Anambra state.

The embattled party Chairman was declared winner, by the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, who doubled as the chairman of the convention, amidst the objection by the Nigerian Labour Congress, insisting on his resignation.

However, the convention was attended by party chairmen from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, members of states and national assemblies as well as representatives from LGAs, across the country.

Abure’s re-election came a week after members of the Nigerian Labour Union picketed the LP secretariat in Abuja, demanding the postponement of the party’s national convention.

The NLC accused Abure of “financial rascality and contempt for the leadership of NLC”, and of “unilaterally trying to hold a national convention in contravention of the constitution of the party”.

It was gathered that part of the convention’s agenda was to elect a new National Chairman of the party.

Other agendas are the amendment of the party’s constitution and the dissolution of the National Working Committee of the party.
