Former Senator Shehu Sani has spoken out about the ongoing tensions surrounding the Kano Emirship, urging calm and caution in handling the dispute.
In a brief message posted on his X handle, Sani called for “serious restraint” in the application of force, might, and power in the wake of the escalating situation at the palace of the Emir of Kano.
The tension began early on Friday morning when heavily armed police officers surrounded the palace of the Emir, with the presence of security forces noted as early as 6 a.m.
Sources within the palace have hinted that the situation may be linked to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi’s move to appoint a district head for Bichi town, which could be fueling the current unrest.
This latest development is not the first time the Kano Emirship has been at the center of controversy. In May, former Emir Aminu Ado Bayero was dethroned by Governor Abba Yusuf during his absence, and Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II was reinstated.
Sanusi was immediately relocated to the Kofar Kudu palace, while Bayero returned to Kano and settled at the Nassarawa mini palace, triggering a series of legal battles over the legitimacy of the state government’s actions.
The roots of the Kano Emirship crisis trace back to 2020 when former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje signed a law that created four new emirates in the state.
The move was perceived as an effort to diminish the powers of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was later suspended, leading to protests and widespread condemnation from various groups.
Meanwhile, Senator Shehu in a short message on his X handle, said, “In the interest of peace, there should be serious restraint in the application of force, might, and power over the Kano emirship tussle.”
