Kano: Yoruba APC group backs Gawuna ahead of S’Court verdict

A Yoruba political group led by a Kano-based Yoruba Community leader and All Progressive Congress chieftain, Seyi Olunishola, has expressed its support and prayers for the APC governorship candidate in Kano, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, who is awaiting the final verdict of the Supreme Court on the March 18, 2023, governorship election.

The election, which was contested by the New Nigeria People’s Party and its candidate, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been a source of tension in Kano’s political scene, as the governorship election Tribunal and the Appeal Court have ruled in favor of Gawuna and the APC.

In a statement he signed, Olunishola, a former APC Councillor, representing Sabon Gari East Ward in Fagge Local Government Area, Kano, congratulated Gawuna for his victories at the Tribunal and the Appellate Court, and expressed confidence that the APC will triumph at the Supreme Court.

He described the Appeal Court’s verdict that confirmed Gawuna as the duly elected governor of Kano state as, “a landmark decision that brings smiles to the face of Yoruba indigenes resident in Kano.”

He added that “November 17, 2023, a judicial decision reached by the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja, Nigeria, is rich in jurisprudence, in which the court affirmed the resounding victory by the All Progress Congress (APC) and its candidate, Dr. Nasir Yusuf Gawuna.

“I want to use this medium to celebrate the courage and fearless judgment of the Justices of the Appeal Court in upholding the truth in this matter. I also want to congratulate the victorious candidate of the APC, Dr. Nasiru Gawuna, for the feat.”

He emphasized that, “with the strength of the two verdicts at the governorship tribunal and the Appellate, I am confident that the defeated party pursuing the matter at the Supreme Court will face another judicial defeat, given the clarity of the case against them.”

Olunishola praised the APC for its inclusive and unifying leadership style in Kano State, which he said is a miniature of Nigeria due to its diversity in commerce, industry, and ethnicity. He commended Gawuna for his legacy of unity and inclusion from his days as the Local Government Chairman of Nassarawa Local Government Area, during which he ensured the participation of non-indigenes in his government.

He maintained that “the APC enjoys unwavering support from non-indigenous groups existing in Kano.”

He also lauded APC National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, for leading the party to victory in various states, including Kogi and Imo.

“May God continue to bless Kano State and its leaders as exemplified by the leadership of the APC at the National level, as well as, give us a wrap-up victory at the Supreme Court to seal the streak of victories we have enjoyed so far. Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Long Live Kano State,” Olunishola added.
