A former deputy governor and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kogi state, Arc. Abayomi Awoniyi has allegedly dumped the party, a few weeks before the November 11 governorship election in the state.

Arc. Awoniyi made this known in a letter dated 31st of August, 2023, which was addressed to the PDP Chairman in Mopamuro Local Government Area of the state.

It would be recalled that Awoniyi, who served as a deputy governor during the regime of Governor Idris Wada, also participated in the last governorship primary election in the state.

Meanwhile, Awoniyi who is the son of late Sunday Awoniyi, a founding father of the PDP in Kogi state, bemoaned the level of inconsistencies and malpractice that took place during the primary election, which produced Dino Melaye as the party’s candidate.

However, the deputy governor who did not state the cause of his exit from the party, showed his deep appreciation to the party faithful in Mopamuro LGA and the state, while looking forward to their continuous friendship.

The letter read partly: “I hereby write to tender my letter of resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party after 25 unbroken years of loyal and dedicated membership and service.

“With this resignation, I cease to be a member of the PDP. Kindly convey my sincere gratitude to the party faithful in Mopamuro LGA, Kogi West Senatorial District, and indeed the entire state, through your fellow LGA Party chairmen, for their support and camaraderie over the years.

“I look forward to our continued friendship despite no longer being members of the same political party.”

However, there have been speculations that the former deputy governor may be planning to join the ruling All Progressives Congress, ahead of the coming election.
