Kuje: Buhari, defence minister’s response disappointing, says Ndume

A member of the Senate representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, says he is disappointed with the response of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.); and the Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi; on the recent attack on the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

Premium Politics had reported that the prison was attacked by terrorists on Tuesday, whilst hundreds of inmates fled including Boko Haram members.

There have been 18 jailbreaks in the last five years under Buhari and over 4,000 inmates have fled.

According to Ndume, it is the responsibility of the President to address Nigerians and not his advisers releasing statements after every attack.

The senator spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme monitored by our correspondence.

He said, “Honestly, we’re in trouble. Don’t take these things lightly. I’m worried…we should be talking about how to address this matter and what citizens need to do…I’m really disappointed with the response of so many leaders.

“The President or whoever is in charge is supposed to sit some people down and get results, not just making statements. I’ve said it before when it comes to issues like this, it is the President who is supposed to be addressing Nigerians, not some advisers.

“The President should be taking responsibility. He is the President. You see, religiously, by the time you ask people to elect you as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, anything that happens to any Nigerian, we’ll hold you accountable for it,“ he added.
