The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission has officially released the timetable for the upcoming local government elections in Kwara State, set for September 21, 2024.
This announcement is a significant development in the state’s political calendar, marking a key event where chairmen and councillors for the 16 local government areas will be elected.
In a statement signed by KWASIEC Chairman Alhaji Mohammed Okanla, it was noted that the electoral activities would commence on June 21, 2024, with an inaugural meeting involving the leadership of registered political parties. The statement elaborated on the planned activities leading up to the election day.
“Following the recent announcement of September 21, 2024 as the date for the conduct of elections for the offices of chairmen and councillors for the 16 local government areas of Kwara State, the Kwara state Independent Electoral electoral commission on Sunday released the timetable of activities leading to the exercise,” the statement read.
According to the timetable, primary elections for the political parties are scheduled to take place between June 24 and June 30, 2024. The nomination process for candidates will follow shortly thereafter.
“Political parties will obtain and return nomination forms KWSIEC 01 and KWSIEC 02 for Chairmanship and Councilorship Elections between Monday July 1st – 5th July, 2024, while the verification of candidates’ credentials will hold between Monday 8th – Friday 19th July, 2024,” the statement added.
Additionally, the statement outlined that the names of nominated candidates would be displayed on the KWSIEC notice board from July 22 to July 26, 2024. This period will be critical for confirming the candidates who will be contesting in the elections.
“Training of Ad-hoc Staff in all the three senatorial Districts will hold between Saturday July 27th and Wednesday July 31st, 2024,” it continued.
For candidates, the last day for withdrawal from the election by the political parties is set for August 5, 2024. The final list of nominated candidates will be published the following day, August 6, 2024.
Campaigning will officially start on August 19, 2024, and will conclude at midnight on September 19, 2024, giving parties a month to promote their platforms and candidates.
The statement concluded by noting that the collection of certificates of return by the winners will take place at the KWASIEC office on September 23, 2024, formally concluding the electoral process.
