Labour spares airlines from ongoing strike

In a surprise move, the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress have suspended their picketing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, permitting passengers to board their flights.

The decision came after a meeting between government officials and labour leaders in Abuja on Monday evening, where the federal government agreed to reconsider the national minimum wage.

While international flights have resumed, the domestic wing of the airport remains closed, leaving passengers stranded, according to Politics Nigeria.

The labour unions are demanding a new National Minimum Wage Act and a reversal of the increase in electricity tariff to N65/kWh.

The strike, which entered its second day today, has affected various sectors, including education, healthcare, and banking.

The federal government has appealed to the labour unions to call off the strike and return to negotiations.
