A gathering of the Labour Party in Aba, Abia State, was violently disrupted by over 20 masked men suspected to be policemen.
The incident occurred when the masked individuals stormed the meeting venue, ordering attendees to remain silent, according to Vanguard.
The men then approached Prince G.O. Ndubueze, secretary of the Labour Party local government election committee, and informed him that he was under arrest.
However, party members refused to let Ndubueze be taken away, citing the lack of a warrant.
In response to the disruption, over 500 Labour Party members marched alongside Ndubueze to the Aba Area police command, protesting the police action.
Ndubueze has accused Governor Alex Otti of attempting to intimidate him and impose chairmanship and councillorship candidates in the upcoming November 2 local government election.
Ndubueze emphasized his commitment to resisting intimidation and ensuring the Labour Party’s independence in Abia state. He stressed that the party will not tolerate imposition, particularly from a governor who came to power through legitimate election.
The incident has sparked concerns about the role of law enforcement in politics and potential abuse of power. The Labour Party’s stance against imposition highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding the local government elections.
“I didnt get any warrant of arrest from anywhere. I don’t even know whether they are policemen, but as law abiding citizen, I’m going with the police. But I will never bow to intimidation from Gov. Alex Otti. We won’t allow him to impose candidates in this local government election.
“This is a governor who came to power through a legitimate election, but wants to impose candidates. The Labour Party in Abia state won’t tolerate imposition.”
