The Nigerian Labour Congress, Akwa Ibom State Council, has issued an ultimatum to Governor Umo Eno, demanding that he sign the agreement on the new minimum wage and declare its implementation date by midnight on December 3, 2024.
Failure to meet these demands will result in an indefinite strike by workers beginning today, December 4, 2024.
The ultimatum was outlined in a communiqué issued after an emergency State Executive Council meeting held in Uyo. The document, signed by NLC Chairperson Comrade Sunny James, detailed the workers’ grievances and resolutions.
The NLC acknowledged the governor’s recent approval of N80,000 as the minimum wage but stressed the importance of formalising this decision.
“The SEC urged the governor to sign the wage agreement, including the implementation date, while staff verification continues,” the communiqué stated.
The NLC also highlighted workers’ decision to delay joining the nationwide strike that began on December 1, 2024, as a mark of respect for the governor, who was mourning the loss of his wife.
Key Resolutions
Acknowledgment of N80,000 Minimum Wage Approval: The SEC recognised Governor Eno’s approval of the new minimum wage.
Call to Sign Agreement: The governor was urged to formalise the wage agreement and declare the implementation date promptly.
Strike Action: The NLC resolved that workers would commence an indefinite strike today, December 4, 2024, if the agreement was not signed by the midnight deadline.
Protest Plans: Workers were directed to stage a mass protest at the Akwa Ibom Government House on December 9, 2024, if their demands remain unmet.
Salary Payment Concerns: The NLC criticised delayed salary payments since September 2024, attributing the problem to Zenith Bank’s alleged failure to disburse funds for timely payments. The union warned of plans to picket the bank if the issue persists.
Reaffirming its commitment to workers’ welfare, the NLC urged the state government to prioritise addressing these grievances.
“We remain resolute in ensuring the welfare of our members and demand the government meet its obligations without further delay,” the communiqué added.
