Mohammed Hayatu-Deen quits presidential race hours to PDP primary

Hayatu-Deen

A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP presidential aspirant, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, steps down from the party’s presidential primaries today, May 28th 2022.

The business mogul made this announcement in a signed statement to the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, saying the contest has become “obscenely monetised”.

He further lamented the party’s inability to agree on a consensus.

“I joined the contest as a democrat, with an open mind to keenly contest and accept the result of a process that is fair, credible and transparent. We have endeavoured to forge a consensus which would have facilitated a seamless emergence of a candidate which unfortunately could not be achieved,” he said.

Expressing regrets about the entire process, which he refers to as being far from ideal, he recounted, “I did not join party politics and to contest for the presidency because of personal gains and inordinate ambition, but to serve our country.

“It is therefore based on personal principles and with great humility that I have decided after wide consultations to withdraw from this contest which has been obscenely monetized,” he added.

Premium Politics had earlier reported that a PDP presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, quit the party for similar reason as Hayatu-Deen’s and later joined the Labour Party.
