Niger coup: ECOWAS holds emergency meeting in Abuja

Leaders from the Economic Community of West African States Authority of Heads of State and Government are currently gathering in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, for an emergency conference to discuss the next course of action in response to the coup in the Republic of Niger.

The meeting, which began few minutes ago at the Presidential Villa, will be presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his capacity as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

President Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco of Guinea-Bissau and President Mahamat Kaka of Tchad are among the African leaders who have arrived at the venue. The other two are the presidents of Côte d’Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara and Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé Eyadéma.

Others are President Macky Sall of Senegal, President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic, President Nana Akofo-Ado of Ghana and President Adama Barrow of The Gambia, among others.

Recall that President Tinubu had warned that ECOWAS would not condone coups in the continent in response to the political upheaval in the Republic of Niger.

This was after the military took over the running of the country after ousting its president, Mohammed Bazoum.
