Nigeria eyes nationwide 5G rollout with Swedish partnership

Vice President Kashim Shettima and Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State are currently in Sweden to explore sustainable transportation and advanced telecommunications solutions for Nigeria.

In a statement released on Saturday in Jos, Gyang Bere, Director of Press and Public Affairs to Governor Mutfwang, outlined that the visit is part of Shettima and the governor’s efforts to pursue strategic partnerships for Nigeria’s development.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the vice president, the governor, and other top government officials are on a two-day official visit to Sweden.

The visit includes engagements with industry leaders from Scania and Ericsson, companies with the potential to transform Nigeria’s infrastructure.

“During their visit to Scania’s headquarters in Södertälje, the Nigerian delegation engaged with the renowned automotive manufacturer, known for its pioneering green innovations,” Bere stated. “Scania, a leader in heavy-duty truck and bus production, is set to collaborate with Nigeria to modernise its transportation sector using biofuel-powered solutions.”

Mr. Fredrik Wijkander of the Scania Group led the Nigerian delegation on a tour of the facilities and highlighted Scania’s global impact in revolutionising transportation through biofuel technologies, emphasising their potential application in Nigeria.

Vice President Shettima also led the delegation to Ericsson, the global telecommunications giant, for high-level discussions aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s digital landscape. The team was welcomed by Mr. Patrick Johansson, Senior Vice President and Head of Middle East and Africa, and Mr. Peter Olusoji Ogundele, Head of Ericsson Nigeria.

“The discussions focused on strategic collaborations to advance Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, accelerate 5G technology implementation, and develop robust digital infrastructure to support the country’s evolving communication needs,” Bere explained.

One of the key outcomes of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Nigeria and Ericsson.

The agreement marks a significant step towards deploying 5G technology across critical sectors in Nigeria, with the goal of driving technological transformation and stimulating economic growth through cutting-edge communication solutions.
