The Federal Government has confirmed that the newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, first identified in Australia and now reported in several European countries, has not been found in Nigeria.
Kachollum Daju, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, clarified that a recently leaked letter addressed to the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors was a precautionary measure and not intended to cause alarm.
Daju explained that the letter, which was shared to inform health authorities of the variant’s spread, aimed to ensure hospitals are prepared given the upcoming festive season, when international travel is expected to increase, according to Channels TV.
Daju noted that the XEC variant has already been detected in 29 countries, and as travelers from around the world arrive in Nigeria, it is crucial for health facilities to be on high alert.
The government is urging hospitals to stay vigilant and implement preventive measures to avoid being caught off guard by any potential cases.
In a letter dated December 5, 2024, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare instructed health authorities to activate enhanced alert systems across hospitals and maintain a heightened awareness for patients presenting COVID-like symptoms. The letter, signed by Dr. O.N. Anuma, Head of the Teaching Hospital Division, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, emphasized the need for collaboration with relevant stakeholders and the sharing of critical data regarding the variant.
