The Coalition of Middle Belt Groups has raised the alarm that Nigeria is gradually sliding into a one-party state under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
The convener of CMBG, Ben Omale who stated this while speaking to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, expressed concern over commendations from certain quarters, particularly the All Progressives Congress in Plateau State, applauding the court rulings as democracy in action.
Ben Omale criticized the alleged efforts by those he described as anti-democratic forces to destabilise Plateau State and the entire country as a whole.
CMBG was reacting to recent court judgments which sacked some lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party in Plateau State from the national assembly.
According to the group, the rate at which members of the opposition parties are losing their seats is a pilot by “closet fascists aiming to transform Nigeria into a one-party dictatorship.”
The statement reads partly: “What should scare Nigerians and the world at large, gentlemen of the press, is that they plan to implement this playbook in other non-APC states for the party to control all the states of the Federation in the next eighteen months. In this, the Middle Belt is particularly endangered because we will bear the brunt of any resulting insecurity from this criminal experiment they are performing with Nigeria’s democracy.”
