Nigerians gathered to pay their last respects to Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the national flag, as his remains were laid to rest in Ibadan on Friday.
The funeral service, organized by the Oyo State government, was held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium and drew numerous mourners.
Acting Governor Bayo Lawal delivered a heartfelt tribute, praising Akinkunmi as a symbol of patriotism and humility, according to Independent.
The acting governor said, “Pa Akinkunmi’s life demonstrated what it means to serve one’s country with dignity and love.”
He emphasized the significance of the flag’s design, representing Nigeria’s natural resources and hope for peace.
The officiating minister, Pastor Olufemi Solomon, delivered a message titled “The Day of Accountability,” focusing on legacy, responsibility, and living a purposeful life. Dignitaries, including former and current government officials, attended the ceremony to pay their respects.
Akinkunmi, affectionately known as “Mr. Flag Man,” passed away at 87, leaving behind a lasting impact on Nigeria’s identity. His design, conceived in 1959, features green and white colors, symbolizing lush vegetation and peace.
