A cross-section of Nigerians in Abuja challenged the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission to name and shame indicted corrupt government officials.
The stakeholders, including religious leaders, Civil Society Organizations, lawyers, and representatives of the international community, made this call at a roundtable meeting to review the implementation of the National Ethics and Integrity Policy and the Ethics and Integrity Compliance Scorecard.
The Director of Al-Habiyyah Islamic Society, Imam Fuad Adeyemi, said, “publish state by state, ministry by ministry, agency by agency names of corrupt institutions…ICPC should deploy social media to ensure such names go viral.” He also disclosed that Moslem clerics are being trained to shun corruption and engage in productive ventures.
The General Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Apostle Samson Fatokun, said, “the step taken by ICPC is in order…but it must start from the top instead of the grassroots.” He lamented the high level of moral decadence in the country.
The chairperson of the Anti-corruption and Transparency Unit of the Nigeria Immigration Service, DCI Florence Laira, said, “it is through forums like this that we can engage in meaningful dialogue…and work together to ensure ethics and integrity are deeply ingrained in the culture of every public office.”
ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Aliyu, SAN, said, “I challenge religious bodies, civil groups, and Nigerians to come up with fresh ideas…that would enhance the country’s war against corruption.”
He added, “attitudes have to be changed and anti-corruption mindset inculcated…to overcome national and institutional challenges.”
Aliyu also explained that the objective of the evaluation of MDAs through the ethics and integrity compliance standards is to monitor and evaluate them on Key Performance Indicators.
He said, “this is meant to ascertain their level of compliance with institutional ethics and integrity requirements…and avail the ICPC with a tracking and diagnostic tool and intelligence to monitor system risks and vulnerabilities.”
