The National Coordinator of the ‘Obidient Movement,’ Yunusa Tanko, has expressed optimism about the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, becoming Nigeria’s president in 2027.
Tanko stated that while electoral malpractice prevented Obi’s victory in 2023, a “new Nigeria” is achievable if voters elect the right leaders.
Tanko shared his thoughts at a one-day symposium titled “Repositioning the Obidient Movement for Greater Impact,” organized by the ‘Obidient’ Movement and Anambra State Support Groups on Saturday at the All Saints Cathedral Auditorium in Onitsha, Anambra State.
“We are dedicated to promoting good governance and accountability by bringing together key stakeholders to discuss Nigeria’s future,” Tanko said. “This event underscores the movement’s commitment to unity, justice, and equity.”
He continued, “Obi has the potential to emerge as president in 2027 if we put our acts together. We will have our agents prepared well before the 2027 general election, training and retraining them.”
Tanko added, “A new Nigeria is possible if we start doing the right things in electing those who lead us. We are determined to end bad governance in Nigeria by ensuring the right people are elected. During the 2023 general election, we were accused of lacking structure, yet Peter Obi won the election but was denied victory due to electoral malpractice. This time, history will not repeat itself.”
Tanko pointed to dissatisfaction with the current government, even in the North, and pledged to push for electoral reform, saying, “We will mobilise our people on the streets, and in the courts, and present our proposals to the National Assembly. The Obidient Movement seeks to empower Nigerian youths, advocating for meaningful change and accountability. Our mission aligns with the pursuit of good governance, justice, and equity.”
He also called on the South East to continue supporting the movement, emphasizing the need for free and fair elections that genuinely reflect the people’s will. Tanko further argued for the appointment of an Independent National Electoral Commission chairman free from presidential influence to ensure independence.
Prof. Stella Okunna, chairing the event, emphasized the critical role of good governance and thanked the organizers for reinvigorating the movement. She encouraged the group to increase their visibility beyond party lines.
Labour Party’s 2025 Anambra governorship aspirant, Valentine Ozigbo, also addressed the gathering, underscoring the movement’s commitment to advancing Nigerians’ interests and urging unity among members.
“I have distributed a document titled ‘Ka Anambra Chawapu,’” Ozigbo shared. “The document outlines policies for a better, brighter, and more prosperous Anambra, which, when implemented, will ensure a better future for the state.” He emphasized the importance of uniting to challenge incumbents.
Economist Prof. Pat Utomi, addressing the event virtually, urged members to act collectively and proactively toward a brighter future.
