The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has declared that the group will pursue alternative paths to serve Nigerians if the Labour Party continues to resist good governance and accountability.
In an interview with Arise News on Tuesday in Abuja, Tanko emphasized that the Obidient Movement is larger than the Labour Party itself.
“The Obedient Movement is bigger than the Labour Party. We have them everywhere, academicians, traders, some members of other political parties.
” When it becomes inevitable that the Labour Party is not ready to assimilate the idea of good governance; we will have to look for another opportunity.”
He pointed out that despite the challenges faced by the party, the movement is prepared to broaden its reach and continue its mission, particularly following the setbacks of the 2023 general elections.
Tanko reflected on the Labour Party’s shortcomings in the recent elections, acknowledging that the party faced significant internal challenges. One major issue was the failure to cover 1,760 polling units during the election. He revealed that the Obidient Movement intends to address this gap by establishing a more robust presence across all polling units in future elections.
Tanko also addressed the criticism that the movement lacked structures during the 2023 elections, admitting that this was a valid concern. He assured that the movement is now focused on building a solid infrastructure to address this issue and meet future challenges head-on.
He further discussed the expanding influence of the Obidient Movement, noting significant support across Nigeria, including in the northern regions, which was previously seen as a stronghold for other political parties. Tanko also acknowledged public disappointment with the conduct of Labour Party lawmakers elected through Peter Obi’s influence, stressing the need for better structure and organization within the movement to address the growing dissatisfaction.
““During the 2023 general elections, we were accused, rightly so, that we do not have structures in all of the polling units.
“We are getting prepared and we are ready to face the challenges,” he added.
