The Nigerian Army on Monday marked a significant milestone with the symbolic lowering and hoisting of the command flag at the Army Headquarters, as Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede officially assumed command as the 24th Chief of Army Staff.
Oluyede’s appointment was made by President Bola Tinubu on October 30, following the death of his predecessor, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.
He had been serving in an acting capacity until his official confirmation by both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The ceremony, which included the lowering and hoisting of the command flag, symbolized the formal start of Oluyede’s tenure as COAS.
This took place after his appointment was confirmed by the National Assembly.
Prior to his new role, Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, based in Jaji, Kaduna.
The 56-year-old officer, who was a course mate of the late General Lagbaja in the 39th Regular Course at the Nigeria Defence Academy, was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992, having joined the military in 1987.
He rose through the ranks, reaching the position of major general in September 2020.
