The Labour Party’s Ebonyi State chapter has expressed confidence that its former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, possesses the skills necessary to rejuvenate Nigeria’s struggling economy.
In a recent expanded stakeholders’ meeting held in Abakaliki, the party emphasized the need for collective support from Nigerians to advance their mission of bringing positive change to the nation.
The meeting, which included key party figures from different senatorial zones, was convened to discuss future political strategies and member mobilization efforts. The communique issued after the meeting was signed by Rt. Hon. Linus Okorie (Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone), Dr. Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh (Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone), and Rt. Hon. Bar. Emmanuel Nwobo (Central Senatorial Zone).
The communique explained the purpose of the meeting: “The members of the National Transition Committee of the Labour Party, Chief Fidelis Nwankwo, Rt. Hon. Linus Okorie, and Dr. Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh convened the stakeholders briefing with a view to informing members of the Labour Party, Ebonyi State Chapter, about the future political activities of the emerging Labour Party, which include mobilization of new members and registration.”
The statement also reflected on the recent post-election reviews conducted by both the National and State Working Committees of the party. It affirmed that Peter Obi continues to be the party’s National Leader and highlighted his qualifications to address Nigeria’s economic challenges: “His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi remains the National Leader of the Party and he, Mr. Obi, is bestowed with the appropriate competences to salvage the Nigerian economy from its declining fortunes.”
The stakeholders recognized the importance of uniting behind the National Transition Committee’s efforts to organize a comprehensive State Congress and National Convention for the Labour Party.
They also called for reconciliation among party members to foster unity and advance their political goals.
The communique further stated: “Stakeholders observed the need to support the National Transition Committee in her bid to conduct an all-inclusive State Congress and National Convention of the Labour Party respectively. Furthermore, stakeholders urged feuding stakeholders of the party to sheath their divisive swords in the overall interest of Labour Party and our target to better the lots of Nigerians.”
Additionally, the stakeholders set a membership target of 400,000 for the party and resolved to pursue this goal with dedication: “A united Labour Party, Ebonyi State Chapter, shall pursue with vigor the conversion and registration of new members into the party at the right and designated time and also set a target of 400,000 members.”
In a notable development, the meeting also saw the adoption of Engr. (Chief) Fidelis Nwankwo as the new leader of the Labour Party in Ebonyi State. This decision was formalized through a motion moved by Chief Jerry Obasi, a former Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, and seconded by Hon. Sylvester Nwankwo, a former member of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly.
The communique concluded: “Furthermore, in a motion moved by Chief Jerry Obasi, the former Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, and Deputy Governorship Candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance in the 2015 general election in Ebonyi State, and seconded by Hon. Sylvester Nwankwo, former House of Assembly member in Ebonyi State, the stakeholders unanimously adopted Engr. (Chief) Fidelis Nwankwo as the Leader of Labour Party in Ebonyi State.”
