Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has criticised the statement by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Ibrahim Ganduje, suggesting that the APC would “capture” Osun and Oyo states.
Speaking in Yoruba, Makinde described the remark as misguided and attributed it to possible distraction on Ganduje’s part, particularly in light of the recent governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.
Makinde expressed confidence in the people of Osun State, stating that they would reject the APC and support Governor Ademola Adeleke in the next election.
He highlighted Adeleke’s leadership as a testament to good governance, pointing to completed projects as evidence of progress under the People’s Democratic Party.
Makinde, while commissioning projects executed by Governor Adeleke, congratulated the people of Osun State for electing Adeleke, noting that he had consistently delivered the dividends of democracy.
He lauded Adeleke for completing projects initiated by previous administrations, stating, “This road was started by former Governor Aregbesola, but Governor Adeleke completed it. So, I thank you for completing this road project. This is cementing your position in leadership.”
Makinde further remarked on the importance of prioritising public interest over partisan politics, adding:
“It is such minds that will say, ‘I did not start the project, and I am not supposed to complete it.’ No, the people must come first. Now, a new set of leaders is coming up.”
Encouraging the people of Osun to support Adeleke for another term, Makinde said, “The reward for hard work is more work. So, give him more work to do for another four years.”
He emphasised the alignment of his administration in Oyo with Adeleke’s in Osun, stressing their shared commitment to progressive, people-focused governance, “In this South-West, both of us are the true progressives. We will continue to lead the path and provide good leadership for our people.”
Makinde also addressed Ganduje’s claim about the APC targeting Osun and Oyo, saying, “My people, are you not waiting for them? You will show them that we are different and resolute people. We are law-abiding, and our party plays by the rules.”
Makinde argued that robust infrastructure and good governance are critical to addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges. He also called for reforms to promote true federalism, noting, “Unfortunately, some proponents of true federalism are moving us more into a unitary type of government.”
Governor Adeleke, in his speech, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to addressing the infrastructure needs of Osun State. He urged road users to exercise caution and abide by safety regulations, stating,
“We will not relent until our infrastructure is fixed and until collective prosperity is achieved in our dear state.”
Adeleke assured the people of Osun of his continued commitment to fulfilling their developmental aspirations and delivering on his mandate.
