Former Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, and the spokesperson for the ninth Senate, Ajibola Basiru, have been tipped as major contenders to replace Iyiola Omisore as the National Secretary of the All Progressive Congress.
Abdullahi Adamu and Omisore resigned their positions as National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, on Sunday, July 16.
Oyetola visited the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday. Although President Bola Tinubu was absent from the villa as he was attending the graduation of Senior Course 45 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Jaji, Kaduna State, the former Osun State governor was received by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The former governor had a closed-door meeting with the VP after he was earlier sighted at the Aso Villa mosque.
Although sources within the presidency disclosed to The Punch that the former Osun governor was unwilling to consider the offer because of his 2026 governorship ambition, he was consequently persuaded to accept it.
This comes two days after reports that Tinubu and APC governors had settled for the former Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, to replace Adamu as APC national chairman.
