The Senate caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday began efforts to address the ongoing crisis within the party.
The internal conflict within Nigeria’s main opposition party, PDP, intensified last week as the National Working Committee dealt with a series of suspensions involving its senior members.
The crisis, which has been brewing since the 2023 general elections, recently escalated with deepening divisions and growing factionalism.
The Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum had previously instructed conflicting members to revert to their former positions.
The forum’s chairman, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, made this announcement after the governors’ meeting, which concluded early Tuesday morning.
The decision by the PDP Senate caucus to intervene followed a closed-door meeting that lasted over three hours, chaired by Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro.
After the meeting, Senator Moro, representing Benue South Senatorial District, briefed the press, revealing that an expanded committee has been formed.
This committee includes former PDP governors and prominent party leaders, and its mandate is to engage with aggrieved members to identify their grievances and work towards a peaceful resolution. The committee will present its findings to guide the party’s next steps.
