President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday met with members of the integrity group of the Peoples Democratic party, known as the ‘G5 governors.’
Tinubu received the G5 group, led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, at the state house, Aso Rock in Abuja on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
It would recalled that the group, made up of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state, former Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu),
was formed within the PDP, after demanding a Southern Presidency after the 8 years tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari ended.
However, after former president Atiku Abubakar who is from the Northern part of the country won the primary election to represent the party at the February 25 presidential election, the group demanded the then National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu, step down for a southern replacement as a precondition to support the presidential ambition of the party’s flag bearer in the February poll
Meanwhile, Both Atiku and Ayu called the then governors’ bluff and did not succumb to their demands in the just-concluded elections, which led to division within the party.
The Oyo State Governor, Makinde and Wike who was then the Rivers State Governor however, allegedly played supportive roles to ensure Tinubu’s victory at the polls, while Ortom backed the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.
