Eminent Nigerians, under the umbrella of The Patriots, met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Friday, calling for a people’s democratic constitution.
The group also advised the President and state governors to engage in dialogue with the leaders of the ongoing protests in the country, while warning security agencies against using lethal weapons on protesters.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, leader of The Patriots, revealed that the group made several demands, including the need for President Tinubu to send an Executive Bill to the National Assembly and convene a National Constituent Assembly to draft a new constitution.
Anyaoku explained that the Constituent Assembly would comprise individuals elected by the people on a non-party basis from each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
He emphasized the importance of a referendum in the new constitution, stating: “The new constitution should make provision for a referendum.”
The Patriots’ meeting with President Tinubu aimed to address the ongoing protests and promote a people-driven constitution, ensuring a more democratic and representative governance structure in Nigeria.
