Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has reaffirmed his commitment to creating an inclusive government that provides equal opportunities for all citizens to thrive.
This promise was made during a solidarity visit from the Delta State Association of the Deaf to Government House in Asaba, as part of the 2024 International Week of the Deaf celebrations.
The governor spoke through his Chief of Staff, Hon. Prince Johnson Erijo, expressing his happiness with the peaceful visit and solidarity.
“I am happy that you have come here in peace and we are in solidarity with you all. Governor Oborevwori has promised to run an inclusive administration that will include all Deltans, both those of you who have a disability in hearing,” he stated.
Oborevwori acknowledged the presentations made by the association and assured them that their requests would be considered.
He said, “We have received all your presentations and we are mindful of them. We salute you for all the support, for your steadfastness, for your belief in the Oborevwori administration. We will continue to do more for you people and that is why your requests today will be looked into. We thank you for coming as you celebrate your week.”
The Chairman of the Delta State Association of the Deaf, Comrade Oyibo Emmanuel, emphasized the need for integration into government and requested the appointment of three representatives to handle issues affecting the deaf community. He also highlighted the importance of qualified special teachers in the state’s 11 special schools for effective communication, teaching, and learning.
This visit coincides with the 2024 Deaf Awareness Week, which aims to promote understanding and inclusion of deaf individuals.
The week’s theme, “Sign up for sign language right,” underscores the importance of accessibility and equal opportunities for the deaf community.
