Reps urge Tinubu to submit 2025 budget without delay

The House of Representatives has called on President Bola Tinubu to submit the 2025 budget proposal to the National Assembly without further delay.

This resolution was passed during the plenary session on Wednesday, following a motion moved by Clement Jimbo, a lawmaker from Akwa Ibom.

Jimbo highlighted the need for the president to adhere to Section 11(1b) of the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2027, which mandates that the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework be submitted at least four months before the start of the upcoming financial year.

The MTEF, which outlines projected revenue, expenditure, and budgetary policies for the next three years, is a crucial document that must be presented before the budget itself.

Jimbo expressed concern over the president’s failure to transmit both the MTEF and the 2025 budget proposal, emphasizing that the National Assembly holds the constitutional authority to oversee the use of appropriated funds. He urged that the established timelines for budget consideration and passage be strictly followed, as required by law.

The motion was adopted via a voice vote conducted by House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. In addition, the parliament instructed its committees on national planning, economic development, appropriation, and finance to ensure compliance with the two-week deadline.
